This podcast was my baby. I facilitated and planned the meeting with Ben Efird, the Assistant Director of the Ricker Study Away Center. I also edited and spliced together all of our recordings. My team members helped by giving critiques about the splicing and content order. They had a big part in the interview process. Since neither of them has gone abroad yet, so they interviewed Ben asking their genuine questions about accessing one’s network when studying away. They also picked the soundtrack for our intro and outro. As a group, we created a brand for our podcast, and we hope to continue under that brand for the individual podcasts.
I learned that group projects can actually be really fun when you have a great group! Gabi, Philip, and I work very well together. The process of creating the podcast is a perfect example of time management. We emailed the study away office on the day of the storyboarding lab. I am so glad we did because we were able to meet with Ben the week before the assignment was due, which took a lot of stress away. I also got very comfortable splicing and layering recordings together. When I say “I am very comfortable splicing” I mean it no longer terrifies me!! The entire project was a learning experience, even the interview. I have interviewed others before for other class projects but taking Dr. McArthur’s suggestions of using very open-ended questions really got Ben talking. We left our meeting with him with seven whole minutes of content to work with.
I’m not sure if I would ever create my own podcast outside of this class, but I am now more comfortable with the idea. Audio editing made me get detail oriented and very picky about what changes needed to be made. Going into a career in PR and Marketing being creative and detailed oriented are necessary skills.
